Optimum heat through its 1500 watt heating element. Featuring non-stick plates, you can not only make some perfect Panini’s with this little beast, but a number of other grilled goodies. In fact, the instruction manual itself attests to this by including a number of different recipes that aren’t just Panini’s.

Like all good Panini presses, the floating hinge is really the star of the show here. It comes with a height adjustment system so that no matter how absolutely massive your sandwich is, the top lid can accommodate it without your sandwich sliding apart when the lid closes.

Unfortunately, this Panini press doesn’t have removable plates, but that doesn’t mean you need to shy away from messier recipes. The non-stick on the Breville works wonderfully, and will likely continue to do so for several years of frequent use. Speaking of plates, Breville uses plates that are a little different from its competitors. Instead of ribbed plates on both sides, the bottom plate is flat while the top is ribbed. This is used to provide even heat throughout the sandwich while you still get those beautiful grill marks on the top of your Panini. However, while this makes it great for cooking things other than sandwiches, it can also cause the bottom of your Panini to burn badly if left on too long.

In terms of safety, the Breville could be better. The handle is insulated and located far enough away from the body to not get hot, but the exposed plates on the front could be a burn hazard if touched while heating. The body itself can also get warm, but not so much that you’d risk a burn.

So where does the Breville stumble? Well, it only stumbles slightly by not having features that would make it more useful. One of its major downfalls is the lack of a power button. This means it can’t just sit plugged in like your coffee pot or electric can opener. You need to plug it in for each use and unplug it after. Likewise, the Breville could afford a more precise heating system so you could cook more than just sandwiches with precision. With a 1500 watt heating system, it would benefit from temperature setting opposed to the one-heat-fits-all system that it uses.  However, those two factors aside, there is not much else to fault the Breville for. It works amazingly, as expected from the brand, and it can be a Panini press that lasts a lifetime.
